7 wk old male pitbull with dry nose?

(Mendon Mass)

Why does my 7 week old pitbull have a dry nose? Does it mean he is sick?

Gale's Reply:

Hi Mike:

While a dry nose can be a symptom of illness, it doesn't necessarily mean your puppy is sick. Warm weather, indoor heating or central air can dry out a dog's nose too.

If his nose leather isn't cracked or flaking and he is acting like a normal puppy otherwise--eating, drinking, playing, no vomiting, no diarrhea and not lethargic--he is likely just fine.

That said, if you haven't taken your new puppy to vet yet, now would be the perfect time to have him checked out. If he hasn't had his first set of vaccinations, at 7 weeks he is due to have them now anyway.

Enjoy your puppy! They grow up very fast.
