A Whole New Scary World

Ive always been a huge animal lover. I've rescued and fostered many animals of all types and breeds. I truly believe in walking dogs, my dog everyday. Until last Saturday... My small sized beagle & I were attacked by a PB. We were on our normal route.

The PB broke thru the gate and charged us. I picked up my dog by instinct. The pit knocked me down in which then I went in fetal position to protect my dog. I was screaming for help. This seemed to go on forever as I was getting it from all sides. Finally, the owner ran out (this was also across the street from where the PB broke thru) and I heard her scream " Oh My God! He must of broke thru the gate again!"

I was shaking-- if she was one more min late, my dog would of been dead. I ended up on my stomach at the very end as the pit was dragging my dog out from underneath me.

We survived. I must of protected and shielded my dog pretty well. I was bit in the left ear, hands, and some scrapes and bruises. PO report made. Treated at the hospital. Never saw or heard from the owner.

Worst part is I keep hearing and replaying it over & over. I cant sleep. I haven't walked my dog since. And we've been walking together for 8 years...

I believe if you want to own a PB, you must have a license, go thru personal classes, and cannot live near children or have children. I think your fences should be 8ft and pass inspection. And must see a certified dog trainer that specializes in PB. I could go on... by the time I finish, ya might as well not have one.

This is wayyyy out of control & shame on the ppl that destroyed one of God's creatures.

owners fault not the dog
by: Anonymous

So sorry that happened to you and your precious dog. However, this is the problem, that people want to attack the breed and not the owners for being neglectful and in worst cases train the dog to fight or be mean. We are now on our 4th PB and have NO issues whatsoever. We do live in the forest, have a fenced in yard and keep close eyes on all our pets. Sometimes dogs do get out but unfortunately you ONLY hear about it if it is a pittbull. Look at the facts and you will see that other breeds have much more bites but not reported, such as rottwilers, german shephards and beagles are notorious for biting among others. We also have to realize that dogs cannot speak and what if they are not feeling well and not tended to like they should be. The owners have to be responsible pet owners. All of ours have been lovable, loyal family pets and very friendly. Please do not attack the breed, it is NOT their fault but the owners.

Sad story but far from typical!
by: Anonymous

Pit bulls are naturally cuddle bunnies, lap dogs and people pleasers. Ours requires no fences. She would never stray far from our sides. She is wonderful with our children. Pit bulls make excellent "babysitters" tolerating ear tugging and finger poking better than most dogs. No dog should be left unattended in an unsecure yard regardless of breed. All animals require adult supervision around young children. And I do believe people should be required to spay and neuter their pets unless they are a licensed breeder. All dogs require obedience training in order to be happy well adjusted family members. Pit bull owners should be prepared to be diligent in that training as they are strong animals. This is true of all large dog breeds. To say no one should own pit bulls is ludicous. They are wonderful. Ours is more loving and sensitive than any dog we have ever owned. We feel priviledged to have her as part of our familu.

Lack of Education!
by: Anonymous

I am sorry you experienced this, but as the former comments not the dog the owner! Just so you know I have had Dobermans and pits all my life and the only dog I have ever been attacked by is a Beagle! Go figure that is your breed of dog! Before you go off on a Rant again you might want to educate yourself accordling!

If people have ANY aggressive dog...
by: Anonymous

They should make SURE their fencing is secure! It's not ONLY pits but ANY breed that will aggressively go after another animal! Pits ALWAYS get blamed as the only dog that people shouldn't b allowed to have, before it was rotties & dobermans! It's partly the media for sensationalizing stories of dog attacks stating it was a pit when it is not always & the other is the over breeding by stupid people that make these dogs mean & fight!! They were not "bred" killers, they are mistreated &/or not properly trained & guided! Pits are NOT ALWAYS dog aggressive any more than any other dog! I walk my 3 dogs usually everyday, 2 are pits & the other an old bird dog & I have had MANY other dogs "attack" mine. It takes an aggressive dumb dog to go after 3 dogs together & they included a dumb beagle, a painful yapping snapping chihuahua & a hairy little something or other as well as a pit because they were not leashed or kept in their yard! Luckily mine listen & have not retaliated except for the pit because people will ALWAYS blame the pit if the other dog was hurt or killed even though mine were leashed & NOT the aggressor! It is the owner I also feel that should b a responsible dog owner WHATEVER kind of dog u choose to own!! Don't think they are ALL bad cuz u ran into 1 bad seed!

Ridiculous.
by: Anonymous

That is the most ridiculous load if crap I've ever read. I own a pit and she has never shown aggression of any kind towards anyone, and for you to say that I should have to basically give up one part of my family to keep this part of my family is just plain stupid. My dog acts just like one of my kids. She has her own bed and knows a bedtime just like they do. She has family dinner with us, she has nightly bath time. She takes walks with us and goes on car rides. She gets scared if thunder and plastic sacks for crying out loud. When she gets in trouble she pouts. To tell someone like me that I should have to have a license for my dog and go through an unreasonable amount of effort to provide my baby with a good, stable home and life and all the love she could ever want makes me want to punch you. You attack the breed because if an incident and I'm sure it was scary, but you can't blame every pit for just ones mistake. I've been attacked by small dogs and big dogs too, but I know that I would sound as stupid as you if I demanded outrageous rules for anybody to own those types of dogs.

No way
by: Bullies

I hate that happened to you. I really do, I agree with the license part, were I live in Vegas you have to have your dog licenses by four months no matter the breed. But the other things you said I don't agree with. Sure taking a class is fine, but not being able to own one if you have children, and the 8 foot fence, well.....don't think that's ever going to happen. The more people complain about pitbulls, the more people will want one, kinda weird but it's true. I been told for years that a pit will do this and a pit will do that.......bullshit, all my dog does is act like a big lap dog. Big baby. Protective yes...(he is a dog) but for what happened to you means nothing to the masses out there. Over 70 percent of dogs in this country are pitbulls. They are not going anywhere anytime soon. Florida tried to get strict with the breed and owners said they were staffys, or bullies, guess it worked. The state is flooded with them. The APBT is here to stay. It will be a cold day in hell when they tell me I can't have my dog.

So sorry this happened to you!!!
by: Anonymous

I am appalled that that irresponsible person is even allowed to have a dog! ANY DOG! To think that the dog had broken through the fence before! I have a problem with people who leave their dogs in the yard unsupervised to begin with, but that's another issue altogether.

I had the horrific experience of having an-off leash dog charge at my (leashed!!) dogs. I was really angry because I live in a city with a leash law. One of my pitties is not naturally social and I work very hard to keep her away from others unless we are in a controlled situation (we are working with a trainer on modifying her behavior). I was able to get the other dog away but basically that irresponsible owner put me in a bad position! Had that dog been hurt, I would have been blamed because my dog is a pitbull, and yet it would have been the other owner's fault entirely!

I do appreciate your position but please realize that there are many pitbull owners like myself who work hard to make their dogs good citizens and follow the rules to protect other canines. Had your experience happened to me, I would have insisted the owner be fined for her lack of responsibility!

Again, I am so sorry this happened to you and I hope you and your wonderful dog will be back to walking soon!

Ok calm down
by: Anonymous

I want to appoligize for the insensitive people on here, It's a mental problem check out pit bull owners case study these people feel rejected from society like the dog there for they will say anything to defend them, ie they aren't any differant then other dogs we all know thats bs most dogs bite as a deterrant "hey you don't belong here" but pits are so tenacious in their "protection" they won't release then you,add in the escape, artist ability, and the mental defects they attract its a recipie for disaster, you will hear any number of excuses ,my dogs not a pit, the dog that attacked wasn't a pit, the yorkie had it coming, the toddler must have provoked the dog ect its quite "ridiculous" you can see it here most of the post are bashing your beagle or calling names then defending their dog by saying she's a baby, well that's a huge mistake these dogs must be trained with pack mentality they become dangerous when they don't know their place in the pack then something our, someone challenges that and ....well you know check out occupymaulstreet, one states account of DB and DBFR in one state after BSL was lifted its really sad seem s their snack of choice toddlers and old people.
