The BARF Diet

The BARF Diet: How Raw Food worked for our dog.

Right from the start our puppy Luigi was a really itchy dog. After doing some tests, the vet said he thought it was Luigi's diet that was the problem - he was on an ordinary commercial pet food at the time.

We changed his diet and did see an improvement. He was much less itchy and did seem to have more energy. But the wheat-free kibble was really expensive and he didn't like it that much. We tried a few different makes but he didn't really approve! I was also still worried at what ingredients went into the food.

When I first heard about the BARF, or raw food diet, I thought the idea of messing around with raw meat was pretty horrible. And I wasn't sure that I could really give him a balanced diet - many people advocate giving fruit or vegetables with it. I wasn't sure how much to give or what to supplement with.

Soon after this we went to visit a large dog show - and were amazed to find that you can buy pre-packaged raw meat. We talked to the vendors and they told us exactly where the meat was coming from (proper human grade meat). The packages contain the right balance of extra fruit and vegetables and other essential nutrients. The food is delivered to my door in 1Kg frozen blocks that I just defrost before I use. This makes it a really hassle free diet - plus the fact that it actually works out cheaper than the expensive diet he had beforehand. We buy a selection of blocks - so sometimes he will have chicken, or beef, or even tripe.

Our dog really loves his food now. We still give him some healthy dog treats and itching is a thing of the past. He is very healthy and full of energy. We do sometimes have to switch him back if we are traveling - but a raw dog food diet works great for him (and us!).

BARF diet?
by: Anonymous

what is the name of the company that supplies you with the raw dog food diet?? I have 2 APBT and they have the same problem with itching a lot and my male (duke) started balding and getting the hot spots from the food we had him on, we have switched dog foods several times and found one that has worked the best so far, but both of them still itch! I would love to try the raw food diet

Lots of companies offer frozen raw food
by: Gale

Hi. I don't know if the original poster is watching for comments or not. So, I'll just mention that there are a number of companies that offer human grade prepackaged raw food now that the diet has gained such popularity. You can even order online if your local pet supply store doesn't carry raw food.

The banner below will take you to the Only Natural Pet Store where you can do a search for raw dog food and see a variety of products that are available.

If you try this, I hope you'll post back here and let us know how it worked for your dogs.

Itching Dog
by: Anonymous

I totally understand what you're dealing with. My son's GS has had this problem, very severely for a couple yrs. Vet gives him shots, pills, etc, but nothing works. I kept him w/me for a month up North. I switched his diet to Blue Buffalo....but nothing is helping this poor dog. He's balding again by rear leg/butt area. He even had itching by his ears & had a very swollen area on the ear which Vet operated on, & now that ear looks deformed. Does anyone have any suggestions? The dog is now very overweight too & he doe not get fed much at all. Any comments would be appreciated. Thx in advance.
